Culture – Maxxium Australia

Who is Maxxium?
In 1999, Highland Distillers of Scotland, Jim Beam Brands of the USA and Remy-Cointreau of France, created an international sales and distribution network, called Maxxium Worldwide. In 2001 Vin & Spirit AB of Sweden, famous for its Absolut Vodka brand, became the fourth shareholder. Maxxium Worldwide has operations in over 35 countries covering more than 60 markets and employing 1,700 people. Australia’s head office is in Gordon, Sydney NSW.

What have they done with AC?

In 2001, there was a change of senior management. The incoming managing director recognised there was a need for culture and leadership development. The MD had previous experience with organisational culture development and was familiar with the diagnostic tools used and the commitment it takes to develop a constructive culture.

In 2002 AC was engaged to measure and assist Maxxium Australia in developing the leadership and culture. The initiative has been “owned” by the executive team and is being delivered to the entire organisation.

To follow is the process been taken so far. The “Develop” and “Coach” phases are currently being run out to the organisation.

1. Understand
  1. AC met with the senior management team (SMT) to explain what they were “getting into” and the commitment it would take if they were to proceed with culture measurement and development
  2. AC conducted site visits to head office and NSW sales branch to understand the work environment and processes
  3. AC conducted a half day session for the SMT to understand the diagnostic tools (OCI LSI)
2. Measure
  1. AC tailored the measurement to meet Maxxium’s structure, measuring the entire organisation, broken into states and business units
  2. AC measured the actual and preferred culture using the Organisational Culture Inventory (OCI)
